Leading from the Front of the Room Sessions

You may be ready to teach BUT are you prepared to lead from the front of the room?

My name is Ericka Hines and I offer expert guidance, direction and strategies for designing and delivering exceptional workshops and classes.

Are you a new trainer, a seasoned professional, a coach, or an entrepreneur?
Are you conducting a workshop or teaching a class soon?

Consider this: Every time you stand in the front of a room to deliver a training or teach a class, you have an opportunity to influence, to coach, and to lead. Heady stuff, right?

People with the desire to teach usually want to:

  • Command attention and gain respect when they stand in front of a room,
  • Show off their expertise by delivering information that is clear, organized and action-oriented, and
  • Be considered a “go to” person in their field

So that they can

  • Get their next promotion
  • Get their next job
  • Get that new funder on board
  • Get a new piece of business

In short, so they can move up to doing bigger and brighter things!

But, what happens in between our intention to shine when we’re at the front of the room and our less-than-glossy nerves when we’re actually up there?

  • We get busy with other work,
  • We get overwhelmed with the amount of information we have to cover,
  • We are concerned we won’t keep our audience’s attention,
  • We think our information will be boring or nothing new, or
  • We worry we will be like a “deer in the headlights” when it’s time to answer their questions.

Ever felt that way? We all have…

If you  want to go a step beyond teaching and to creating a workshop or training that will highlight what you know and position you as a leader right  now  and into the future; then maybe you need the mind of someone who can tell you what is going to work and what won’t, help you add/subtract material, create a compelling presentation and give you feedback on what you need to improve upon.

Here I am. Ready to help you design that next workshop

Expert Guidance|Solid Directions|Creative Strategies

In my long career as a trainer and teacher, I have designed and delivered dozens of presentations and workshops to all kinds of audiences, from 90-minute workshops to all-day trainings, for groups as small as 5 people to as large as 150. I’ve helped national organizations, federal government bureaus, and small business owners develop and lead effective, successful learning events…and I can do the same for you.

The benefit of working with me is you will be getting:

Expert Guidance|Solid Directions|Proven Strategies

and a bit of hand-holding for your next workshop or class.

In other words: You get my big brain, my numerous resources, my training experience and my workshop design background to use.

Imagine your next class or workshop…

  • Is it an audience that’s excited to learn what you have to share? Or…
  • An audience that would rather visit their dentist than hear from you.

Guess what? I have successfully taught both types audiences. The key was to focus on the material AND the audience AND the format of the workshop.  None are optional. All three are essential.

4 essentials to a successful learning event

1. The Material

What material do I need to cover vs. what do I want to cover?
Hint: Make sure your content is not just useful, but also compelling and actionable.

2. The Format

How can I make the event interactive? What is the right combination of information and action steps to make sure my audience gets it?
Hint: For every point of information you present, think about one way (activity, discussion, or handout) that you can reinforce it.

3. The Audience

What do they know or not know about my topic?
Hint: Survey your audience before the presentation to assess their knowledge and clarify what’s in it for them.

4. SelfI am nervous. I feel sick. I am not sure I can do this. What if they get bored and tune me out?  Hint: In the moments before you start your workshop, focus on you. Breathe, say a mantra, roll your neck back and forth. Just get ready for you big moment. Then open your eyes and get started.

How I can help you shine at the front of the room…

My Lead from the Front of the Room workshop focuses on those essential elements: Material, Audience, Format, and Self. It has been popular with dozens of  audiences since I first started delivering it two years ago. Like you, participants are talented in their fields and want to put on effective workshops, but are not sure exactly how.

And from teaching that class, I learned that my participants– leaders, trainers, and teachers– would build their best classes and workshops when I was working with them one-on-one.

What people are saying:

“We invited Ericka to lead a session at our ProInspire Fellows training and she was fabulous! We were excited by the variety of topics she has for professional development and asked her to do a session on “leading from the front of the room”. Her presentation was great! It was thoughtful, funny, engaging and instructional. She took time to answer questions as they came up during the presentation and was able to give examples and information that were very relevant to the audience. Ericka is a smart and playful presenter – our group really enjoyed learning from her.”

Monisha Kapila, Executive Director, ProInspire Fellows

Working with you, I offer:

  • Expert guidance
  • Clear direction
  • Proven strategies

How is this one-on-one environment different from the group class?

In a private collaboration—

  • Your  confidential content can be discussed freely,
  • Issues specific to your learning environment and culture can be addressed,
  • Your personal concerns remain personal, and
  • The focus is narrowed to how the three essential elements will work best for you and your audience.

After 10 years as a trainer, I’m well-versed in what does and doesn’t work in a classroom setting. When you work with me, you will be tapping into a decade of experience designing and delivering classes, workshops, trainings that are concise, direct, useful, and productive.

Your next workshop is a chance to build a strong reputation. Are you ready?

When you schedule a set of Lead From the Front of the Room private sessions, we will:

  • Develop a roadmap that will pinpoint the key topics that must be covered in your workshop, class, or training,
  • Outline how to build content that will support those key topics,
  • Refine the course material from your understanding of your audiences knowledge and interest in your subject,
  • Discuss ways to build in reinforcement  that help your audience get it,
  • Browse curated lists of interactive exercises, trainer tips, and workshop examples and pick those that best emphasize your subject matter, and
  • Highlight critical action steps for getting yourself workshop “ready to roll”

What people are saying:

Ericka gave me amazing insight into what my audience needs to stay engaged while learning. She understands how adults really absorb information and helped me create an agenda that doesn’t talk down to the students. When we finished our work together, I felt much more confident in my approach. I just presented my agenda to a client who said, “I’m so excited about this I could jump out the window right now!” I think that’s a pretty good sign.

Frequently asked questions

Will you design my training for me and then deliver me the finished package?
That work is better handled by a curriculum designer who will take your information, distill it and then hand you back a trainer’s manual, slide deck and materials.

If I give you a slide presentation, will you redo it for me?
As part of our work together I will help you identify ways to improve your slide deck so it supports your workshop, and you will be responsible for the hands-on work of creating and editing slides.

Would you be willing to come to my presentation and give me feedback in person?
That would be fun! If you are in the DC-VA-MD area I can come to your office or venue and offer immediate feedback on presentation tactics like style, presence, use of your hands, etc. Pricing would depend on your location, so please contact me for details.

Can we meet in person for these sessions?
Private consultations sessions are only offered remotely, but with web technology such as Skype and screensharing, we can see and speak with each other as if we were within arm’s reach. We can review your course materials, you can ask questions, and I can offer feedback.

What if I just want to meet with you once to pick your brain? Can that be done?
Yes, it can. Contact me for availability and rates.
